Abstract: Norma is a lyrical tragedy or opera in two acts by Vincenzo Bellini with a libretto by Felice Romani based on the comedy "Norma" or "L'infanticide" by Alexandre Soumet. It was performed for the first time at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 26 December 1831. The opera was given its British premiere in London on 20 June 1833.
The action takes place in Gaul under Roman occupation, and focuses on the love triangle between Pollione, Roman proconsul of Gaul, Norma, his former partner, and the young Adalgisa. The background is the revolt of the Gauls against the Roman occupiers, led by the druid Oroveso.
