Instagram use and mental health in young adults

Abstract

This research study explores the perceived effects of Instagram use on self-esteem, anxiety and depression levels for young adults residing in Malta. A quantitative research method was used. A total of 126 young adults of average age 20.64 years (68.3% females) were recruited to participate in this anonymous online survey. Participants self-reported their psychological well-being traits regarding self-esteem, anxiety and depression levels through the scales of Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, General Anxiety Disorder-7 Questionnaire (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). No statistically significant relationship was found between Instagram use, self-esteem, anxiety or depression levels. Gender differences were observed in regards to self-esteem. This study suggests that although users’ self-esteem, anxiety and depression levels are not currently being affected by increased Instagram use, this may potentially still occur.
