Investigating the perceptions for and against animal assisted therapy (AAT) within the Maltese context to create a working framework

Abstract

AAT is a therapeutic intervention consisting of the specific goal of improving human functioning, such as improving mood and self-esteem and reducing anxiety levels. This study aims to report and discuss the different perspectives expressed by the study's participants to form a profound understanding of the participants' perceptions. In this study, the perceptions of AAT were investigated among both mental health professionals and participants representing the public. A qualitative method was employed, utilising structured interviews with the professionals and focus groups with the general public participants. The data collected was analysed using Thematic Analysis, from which five main themes were elicited. Four common themes were identified between the professionals and the public: 'Level of Expertise', 'Opposing factors', 'Expectations', and 'Animal Welfare Concerns'. An additional theme of 'The Maltese Context' was extracted from the public. Subsequently, suggestions for an adequately working framework to integrate AAT locally were identified by analysing this data.
