Abstract: The TESOL sector in Malta has existed since the 1960s when a small num-ber of private language schools started offering brief English language courses to foreign students, who initially hailed from Italy and other European countries (ELT Council, n.d.). The emergence of these schools was largely possible due to Malta’s relationship with the English language. Given the country’s colonial heritage, English is one of its two official languages, and most of the population consider themselves bilingual speakers (Sciriha & Vassallo, 2006). Even though students learn English from the early years of primary education, levels of profi-ciency in the Maltese population vary (Cambridge English Language Assessment, 2016). W
