Abstract: This paper investigates empirically the relationship between export growth and GDP growth for Malta. Use is made of the time series and cointegration properties of the data to test for Granger causality between the variables. Causality test results indicate a bi-directional causality relationship between the variables for the period under study. The Export Led Growth hypothesis, defined as a unidirectional causal ordering from exports to growth, is therefore rejected in the case of Malta, despite the positive contribution of exports to Malta's overall growth.
