Abstract: Leonardo Sciascia was born in January 1921 in the village of Racalmuto in Sicily. The name of the village was derived from the Arabic rahal mut meaning a "destroyed or dead village". The author's surname is also derived from Arabic. In The Council of Egypt the Arabic language features in a predominant way especially in the beginning of the novel. Unlike other Sicilian writers, Sciascia preferred to remain in Sicily, leaving the island only for short periods. So it was to be expected that in his forty years of writing, his native Sicily would offer a special context for the development of his literary works. [excerpt]
