Abstract: An increased awareness and concern for the environment is not only culturally fashionable but undeniably important and justified. Unfortunately, rhetorical outpourings on environmental issues are often ambiguous and superficial. Private companies have become extraordinarily clever in handling these matters. There is constant talk of sustainable development but rarely does anyone take the trouble to analyse the cause and effect relationships between the ever-expanding industrial capitalist system and the natural conditions of production.
