Abstract: This dissertation offers insights into the theatrical landscape and socio-political climate of this pivotal period, shedding light on the complex interplay between colonial dynamics, communal sentiments and cultural expression within the context of Malta’s Royal Opera House through the performances given by the Dublin Gate Theatre Company during their two visits: 22 April - 1 May 1937: 9 March - 20 March 1938. The company, which is operational to this day, arrived in Malta somewhat serendipitously: en route from Egypt to Ireland, they realised that Malta was on their way. Their visits caused diverse opinions and reactions within Maltese society, sparking discussion about the role of theatre. Taking as its basis the performances by the Dublin Gate Theatre Company, this study will examine the reasons for welcoming the company, with such open arms and its impact on a Maltese audience. The dissertation draws upon official documentation found at the National Archives of Malta in Rabat, as well as newspaper articles and reviews of the time. It aims to provide a better understanding of the British cultural contribution to the local political debate about language and theatre.
