Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore why Maltese individuals choose the game of basketball as their main sport and eventually sustain their participation. Factors that motivate and influence individuals in choosing a sport over another and specifically in choosing basketball will be analysed. In order to answer the research question, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten basketball players playing locally in the top division. Six of which were Maltese athletes while the other four participants were professional foreign athletes. Data collected from all interviews was analysed and results from local and foreign participants were compared together using a comparative analysis approach. The results from this study revealed that the majority of individuals didn’t make their own decision in choosing basketball but were rather influenced by other individuals. Such influences commonly came from people already involved in the game. The degree of motivations and limitations were perceived to be determining reasons for sustaining participation once introduced to this sport. Motivations were based on internal and external factors. Furthermore, internal factors were divided into intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. The less exposure of such factors the less possibility that athletes stay involved in the game. This study also explored and ultimately recommended different elements that lead towards a more interested audience during basketball games.
