The aim of this dissertation is to aid young children with mathematics learning difficulties particularly in relation to the ‘number sense’ concept within the Abacus Scheme which is used in the local Maltese context. The different resources available in the market to teach children the concept of ‘number sense’ were explored. This dissertation sought to evaluate the effectiveness of these resources in meeting the needs of the children with mathematics learning difficulties. Finally, the authors created a resource which can aid all children within a mainstream classroom. This resource was designed on the basis of the extensive research that was carried out beforehand. Consequently, the methodology that was adopted in this dissertation was a bibliographic search. This type of methodology helped the authors compile the different literature found on the resources available to teach ‘number sense’ and the theories around adult-facilitated learning in order to support the resource created. It was established that the ideal resource would offer the students a hands-on experience; in which they can use their whole body and manipulate the resource. The adults’ assistance is essential in the children’s learning process by providing appropriate guidance and further stimulation in order for the children to reach their full potential.en_GB
