On more than one occasion, about a hundred years ago, the Pope considered coming to Malta. Not, as has become routine practice today, to fulfill a pastoral duty or to assert the influence of the Church in some disturbed region of the world. Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903) considered abandoning Rome altogether and taking up residence in Malta, and presumably setting up in these islands the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church.en_GB
