Abstract: Strategies for the prevention of morbidity and mortality from non-communicable disease have been the mainstay of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Health for All (HFA) policy. Effective preventive strategies need to be based on an intersectoral approach, founded on relationships and coalitions between organisations and the professionals working within them. This paper advocates an attitude change for professionals to work at an intersectoral level. Appropriate training and a suitable health care infrastructure is also highlighted by the author as a necessary aspect of the process of production and maintaining effective coalition building. With the appropriate commitment and resolve, the role of professionals in primary prevention is an achievable objective.
