This compendium of selected papers is the first in a series of two volumes aimed
at bringing to light the main proceedings of the 1997 Conference. The first
section comprises a series of invigorating papers, which reflect the complexity
of themes pertinent to the field of substance abuse prevention, from school-
based primary prevention efforts to the pervading role of the media in the
dissuasion of substance misuse. The following, equally captivating section,
examines manifold treatment-oriented issues, highlighting the current debates
on diverging detoxification modalities, the shift toward community-based services,
and innovative approaches aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of rehabilitation
programmes.
