dc.description.abstract | This dissertation investigates the effects of the current media culture on the behaviour and mental health state of adolescents and aims at spreading awareness about the matter through an animated short film. Technological advancements have made it possible to be constantly connected with others (Chayko, 2018), leading to a change in behaviour and in how the own persona is perceived (Turkle, 2011). This altered way of selfperception can lead to serious mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety (Parnell, 2017). Studies conducted by Sherry Turkle (2005, 2011, 2015) have been investigating this issue over the past thirty years and a survey [Appendix A] carried out for this dissertation supports her claims as participants describe their experiences with the matter. In order to mitigate such negative consequences, people should be made aware of the issue. Therefore, the creation and distribution of an animated short film was considered a suitable medium for this purpose. The production process of the animation is documented in detail, explaining the idea generation and methods used for the creation of the film. In this short film, the viewer is taken through a journey with a young adult and her experiences with the social platform Instagram. Using countenances and gestures (Poggi, 2000) the viewer will empathize with the character and her changing emotional state as she consumes different content on Instagram. | en_GB |
