Catch them young : home economics dissemination in kindergarten

Abstract

This study highlights the present areas related to Home Economics which are being disseminated in kindergarten classes. Such a study aims at promoting the delivery of Home Economics topics in kindergarten classes and if possible the integration of such themes in the kindergarten curriculum, as part of different thematic units. The research approach adopted in this dissertation included a Needs Assessment Study which elicited the resources needed to facilitate teaching in health education. The information gathered during the study was instrumental in the creation of teaching aids which were based on the results obtained from the questionnaires and interviews conducted with six kindergarten assistants and ten parents of preschool children. The resource pack was trialled in six kindergarten II classes by kindergarten assistants and preschoolers. The findings from this research provide evidence that Home Economics education in kindergarten classes is minimal, as a result of which children lack awareness of a number of health and nutrition-related concepts. The main conclusions drawn from this study are that through effective teaching aids, Home Economics-related messages can be imparted effectively in kindergarten classes. This substantiates the fact that the resource pack can improve preschoolers' well-being by empowering them with the knowledge required to make healthy and sustainable lifestyle choices. This dissertation recommends the development of a syllabus for kindergarten classes that is based on thematic units related to Home Economics. Furthermore, this study suggests regular training courses in Home Economics-related areas for kindergarten assistants.
