An evaluation of the stoma care services : patients' satisfaction pre and post stoma surgery

Abstract

This study has investigated the patients' experience of the stoma care services provided to them pre and post stoma surgery and during their rehabilitation. A purposive sample of individuals (n=54) who had a stoma and had it reversed between January 2005 and October 2008, covering males and females whose ages ranged from 21 to 80 years was used. A questionnaire formulated by the researcher was the main means used for collection of data. A response rate of 90.7% was obtained. Qualitative data collected was analysed through content analysis, while quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicated that the clients' level of satisfaction with the service received was high overall. The study revealed high satisfaction with the information given. However, respondents desired more information about their intimacy and sexual relationships. Comfort with the stoma appliance and high stoma care self-efficacy were reported, when these were missing quality of life was affected. The results highlighted several nursing implications and a number of recommendations have been identified. The implementation of service standards and new policies to improve quality of care appears to be required. A carefully planned ongoing educational program for healthcare professionals, on key issues on the care of patients with a stoma would help more in satisfying the patients' needs.
