Abstract: | This study is aimed to assess MSM' s (Men who have Sex with Men) knowledge needs' related to learning about Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and other Sexually Transmitted Infections (STis). The objectives of this research were focused on exploring MSM's knowledge of the different STis, modes of transmission, risk factors, symptoms and HIV testing. Furthermore, the research sought to explore MSM' s perception of the degree of protection that a condom offers against HIV /STis, the risks of different sexual activities and their learning opportunities. The entire sample was of fifty-three MSM and snowball sampling was used until the target number of fifty questionnaires was reached. A non-experimental descriptive design was utilised in this study in which self-administered structured questionnaires were distributed. Findings were analysed using statistical analysis. Participants were classified by age and level of education. The study revealed that the majority of the MSM were not aware about the presence of HIV in blood. When age groups were compared, older adults did not know about the HIV test window period. Misconceptions on STis were found among the minority. Moreover, MSM with higher level of education perceived that anal sex is the most risky sexual practice. Recommendations suitable for further research included the need to explore MSM's behaviour in relation to STis. In practice, healthcare providers have to become more familiar with the subject. Moreover, promotion of healthier sexual attitude and pre and post-test counselling are also recommended. |
