dc.description.abstract | The aim of this research study was to assess youth football coaches' level of knowledge of first aid when dealing with injuries and common medical conditions Data was collected quantitatively from four football nurseries by means of a self-formulated questionnaire. Fifty football coaches (total sample from 4 nurseries), were approached to take part in this research study resulting in a sample of forty-seven participants. Approximately half of the participants declared that they possessed a first aid qualification. Findings also revealed lack of preparation and lack of knowledge in basic first aid. Preparation in tackling medical emergencies was not evident. The injuries which youth football coaches felt more confident in dealing with were mainly identified as sprains and bruises. Locally, the need for a first aid qualification is not enforced, and no programme was provided about what is taught regarding first aid during football courses. The results obtained from this research study have contributed to the emergence of a number of recommendations, including the need for a first aid qualification prior to commencement of a football coaching course and a refresher course every three years for every qualified first aider. Recommendations for further research were provided including a replication of the present study on a larger scale and an observational study. Recommendations for better practice were provided, including better provision of first aid care in football nurseries. | en_GB |
