The mam aim of this research project is to explore mentors' views of a continuous assessment system of pre-registration nursing students. The objectives of the research project were to explore the role, function ai1d preparation of mentors in the clinical setting ai1d their working relationship with link lecturers, qualified nurses working in the clinical area, and students. Other objectives sought to explore what mentors think are the favourable and limiting aspects of a continuous assessment, and whether they perceived any need for change. This research project adopted a qualitative approach based on 11 semi-structured interviews within a general hospital in Malta. The Qualitative data gathered was structured and presented using thematic analysis. The main findings of this study were that mentors have their own individual view, which is not guided through reference to a standard role model. A significant lack of preparation and support from universities and link lecturers, mentor colleagues and managerial persons, was noted by the mentors participating in this study. In congruence with the literature, the data revealed that organisational deficiencies (competing duties, lack of time, staff shortages and brevity of placements) hinder the mentors from managing effectively their role. Nonetheless they reported a favourable impact and outcome of the continuous mentorship system. Finally, this research project will encourage the need for more research that explores other aspects such as the mentors' working relationship with their colleagues in the clinical setting and with link lecturers, and whether mentors are satisfied with their role or not. The study recommends more adequate preparation and support for mentors in clinical practice, as well as making students more responsible of their role within the clinical area.en_GB
