Abstract: Attention- deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition seen mainly in children; although it is also experienced in adulthood, it is mainly characterised by a pattern of inattention and/or hyperactive-impulsivity that is more frequently displayed and more severe in individuals at a comparable level of development (American Psychiatric Association, 2000).The use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in children has become extensive. Parents of young children with developmental and behavioural problems such as ADHD are drawn up to CAM therapies to avoid or decrease the use of psychotropic drugs (Chan, 2002). This dissertation asks: How effective is CAM in the management of children with ADHD? The population studied are children aged 0-18 years of age, looking at the use of CAM for effective management of childhood ADHD. Comparison is between the use of CAM in the management of childhood ADHD and not using these kinds of therapies for managing children with ADHD. The expected outcome of this dissertation is better management of ADHD in paediatrics; this will be shown by the subsiding symptoms usually shown in children with ADHD. All studies evaluated in this review, had to be available in the English language and be conducted in these recent ten years. CASP tools were used for appraisal of the literature. Overall this study had inconclusive results; this is mainly because of the lack of reliable studies available that explore this topic. Future studies with larger sample sizes, and increased awareness for health care professionals and the general public are recommended.
