Abstract: The following dissertation is divided into two parts. Part one defines the literary term of fantasy prose in English language children's literature and reviews the genre's historical roots and present form. The second part of this work shows that the developing child needs good literature; this need can be partially satisfied by fantasy prose and reasons to this end are given. A selection of works of fantasy prose for Primary Year Six and Secondary Forms One and Two are given together with pedagogical approaches that are intended to show how students' response to literature may be enriched, in this case, by means of fantasy prose. Finally, an appendix on charting book discussions is included.
