The Mantle of the Expert drama technique created by Dorothy Heathcote involves pupils taking the roles of 'experts' engaged in some form of enterprise. Through a powerful imagined context, pupils will be able to participate and gain confidence in learning situations focusing on learning by doing. This drama technique caters for different abilities through different tasks. Imagination is the main ingredient in the Mantle of the Expert drama technique which is based on experiential learning whereby the pupils put on the role of experts without them really being so. I did a firsthand experience during my third year Teaching Practice (Nov-Dec 2010) using this drama technique to cover the theme chosen as a teaching and learning method. Lesson plans built on the theme chosen for the Teaching Practice were based on the 'Mantle of the Expert' technique through an ethnographic qualitative research. Interviews with pupils in class were held so as to engage their involvement in the lessons through this technique. Interviews with the Head of School and the Assistant Head were also carried out. A sample of pupils' work and 'action' photographs are included to enhance the dissertation. The aim of my research is to propose this thematic approach using the Mantle of the Expert drama technique as a teaching and learning method in our Primary Schools. It is hoped that through the use of this technique, learning will be more fun and cross the boundaries of subject division to create a solid rounded learning experience.en_GB
