Abstract: In spite of it being considered a relatively new genre of literature, young adult fiction is a powerful tool which can help adolescents prepare themselves for impending adulthood. This is achieved by presenting characters and situations which are a reflection of contemporary society together with solutions as to how one can best solve problems commonly associated with this transitional period in one's life. This study aims to make out whether Maltese fiction for adolescents achieves this goal and whether the social aspects tackled in the novels chosen are a true to life representation of Maltese society today. Consequently, discussion centres on how far contemporary literature reflects sociological realities in a Maltese environment.
