Music option at the Gozo College : evaluation and case study review

Abstract

Music is a universal language that has given and continues to give enormous pleasure and satisfaction to countless Music lovers. The rich variety of Music genres ensures a universal and permanent appeal that is as intellectually stimulating as it is emotionally engaging and spiritually uplifting. This dissertation focuses on the underlying rationale and evaluation of the curricular, pedagogical and assessment implications and impact on students related to the introduction of the Music option in the Gozo College Boys' and Girls' Secondary Schools. The participants were Music option and non-option students from Forms 1, 2 and 3. The methodology adopted in this dissertation included questionnaires distributed to Form 1, 2 and 3 students and interviews conducted with Heads, Assistant heads and Music teachers. School visits and Music lessons observation were also an integral part of the research methods used. Research produced a number of findings, namely the positive impact of the Music option on students and preparation for professional Musical careers, the importance of differentiated teaching activities in order to cater for mixed abilities and students' different types of learning, the structure and content of the new Music curriculum and the effective delivery of Music option lessons. The study highlights the benefits gained by adopting assessment for learning and the need for Music teachers to deliver Music lessons characterised by fun and motivating activities. Some significant conclusions were that the Music option is an effective initial step on the way to a professional Musical career. The Music option is also seen as motivating and emotionally engaging. Another conclusion is that participating in Musical activities and events goes a long way in boosting Music option students’ self-esteem, enhancing confidence and instilling a strong sense of achievement and satisfaction.
