Abstract: This study seeks to address issues relating to aliementary imagery within selected texts by early Modern authors, namely Knut Hamsun, James Joyce and Karen Blixen. The thematic structure discussed here, focuses on aspects of culture and community, the transition of the protagonist from innocence to experience, and how these bear upon the consciousness of the novel. Moreover, this study will conclude by addressing the convergence of culture/community/experience as it attempts to relate the idea of memory to processes of ingestion.
