Abstract: | In this study the system of adjectival inflection in German is described with the aim of presenting a simplified interpretation for pedagogical purposes. The pattern of agreement in the nominal phrase in Maltese is first compared to other agreement patterns Maltese learners may be acquainted with. The traditional as well as innovative interpretations of the German adjectival declension system are analysed and a number of textbooks following various teaching methods are discussed. An error analysis of two examination exercises dealing with adjectival agreement reveals patterns of error in the choice of ending which can lead to an improved approach in the treatment of this aspect of grammar. Finally, a model is proposed, in which a cognitive interpretation supplements the communicative method used at present. The idea of Monoflexion, where the case-gender-number marker normally appears at least on one element in the noun phrase, as well as the need to apply a default marker, is assumed to increase the chances of a correct choice of adjectival ending considerably. |
