Abstract: The Mediterranean sea a concentration basin due to a negative water budget receives relatively lighter less saline surface water from the Atlantic through the Strait of Gibraltar. This flow proceed."' mainly towards east across the Strait of Sicily and is counterbalanced by a deeper opposite flow of cooler and more saline water. This flow of Levantine Intermediate water (LIW) occuring at a depth of more than 200 m has its source near Rhodes where cold dense waters form in the winter and sink down the water column.
