Abstract: An inversion procedure has been enjoyed to investigate the important features of the crust and upper mantle structure along the path Malta - Salonika (Northern Greece). Rayleigh waves generated by the earthquake of May 23, 1978, with epicentre at Salonika., and recorded on the long - period, vertical component seismograph at Malta, showed a well dispersed wave train in the period range 10s to 50s. The group velocity dispersion curve was constructed using the multiple filter technique. Inversion of the data has established the existence of a fairly thick crust and a well developed low velocity channel in the upper mantle beneath the Northern Ionian Sea.
