Abstract: | In the field of game studies, contemporary board games have until now remained relatively unexplored. Recent years have allowed us to witness the surfacing of the occasional academic text focusing on board games - such as Stewart Woods' in-depth look into Eurogames (Woods, 2012), Elias, Garfield and Gutschera's Characteristics of Games (2012) which feature an engaging combination of board games with computer games, and most recently Paul Booth's (2015) look into the paratextuality of contemporary board games. As Booth (2015) states, "we are in the midst of a board game renaissance" (p. 2), and with their increased presence in our daily lives comes the increased worth and importance of their analysis as social, textual and experiential phenomena. |
