Abstract: This thesis explores the reality of celibacy in today's pastoral ministry. It is based on a comprehensive and a systematic research, and on personal experience of this phenomenon in the mission field and the impact and influence this ministry has continued to effect on the parish pastoral perspective. It shows how others in loving service can be turned around to foster prayer and promote service of others. The introduction gives a description of the evangelization of Africa, while Chapter One examines the meaning and interpretation from the Biblical and secular understanding of the concept. The Second Chapter discusses certain issues and problems related to Celibacy. In Chapter Three, an understanding of priestly celibacy in an African context is being evaluated. Finally, it looks into the Fidelity Response to priestly celibacy in African culture in Chapter Four. The inductive approach is being utilized in studying priestly celibacy in this particular context. The Sacramental dimensions of Priestly Celibacy, as well as the Social and Pastoral aspects have been studied from the point of view of the Magisterium and the human sciences. Pastoral suggestions have been made in relation to ongoing priestly formation.
