Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to make a critical assessment of Ibn Tufayl's Hayy ibn Yaqzan, a philosophical allegory in which the author, a major figure in the history of Arab-Spanish philosophy, arrives at the highest form of knowledge, that is, mystical union. On the way towards its attainment, the constant problem of harmonising philosophy and dogma and how sublime truths can be communicated, are bound to come under scrutiny. An essential component of this dissertation is the historical background which covers the first part of the work. One cannot place an author and his work outside the political, religious, social and cultural milieu of his time. This holds especially true for a philosopher such as lbn Tufayl whose teachings are in line with the policies adopted by the reigning. dynasty which he served. This implied permitting philosophical discourse within a circle of intellectuals but not its divulgation among the popular masses.
