Abstract: The survey is a common method for obtaining staff, patient, family, and public feedback on the provision of critical care, and it can be used to help set priorities for service improvement. Many readers will be familiar with the usefulness of surveys for understanding critical care practice, education, and policy issues, and their contribution to research, audit, or service evaluation. Surveys can provide data on a broad range of phenomena including attitudes/beliefs, knowledge/ skills, and satisfaction (to name but a few), and are a recognized study design of choice in health services research.1 In this issue, we include a selection of research reports based on survey methodology, together with a variety of papers on comparatively similar topics to those surveyed.
