Evaluation serves many purposes in critical care; it can help us to benchmark existing practices, provide evidence for maintaining the status quo, determine the impact of new initiatives and be a catalyst for change. It is an essential activity for understanding the impact or outcomes of patient and family care, and our professional commitment to continuous quality improvement. In this issue we have a selection of papers that contribute evaluation data obtained through audit or research. The papers demonstrate variation in the purpose of evaluation and methods used, yet each informs our understanding of the importance of questioning and evidencing the efficacy of practice.en_GB
