A New Year is often heralded as a time for looking back on the past and to think about future ambitions, intentions and plans. We reflect on 2017 as a year of opportunity for new collegiate relationships in our role as editorial interns for Nursing in Critical Care. Throughout the year, we have been inspired by authors’ contributions to evidence-based critical care education, policy and practice. Advances in knowledge and creativity are essential to the future of critical care in response to global health and economic concerns. Many units are experiencing an increase in the demand for critical care services, thus adding to the complexity of the work environment, and the intensity of patient, family and nurses’ needs.
