Abstract: Background: Palliative care aims to optimise quality of life during the last stages of life by anticipating, preventing and treating suffering. Despite medical and technological advancements, mortality in Intensive Care Units (ICU) remains high; thus, high-quality palliative care is required in critical areas as well. Although they may appear dichotomous, critical and palliative care share important therapeutic goals and values (Mercadante et al., 2018). Aim: To explore Maltese ICU nurses' and physicians' perceived knowledge, attitudes and behaviours about providing palliative care in critical care settings. [Excerpt]
