Abstract: The aim of the dissertation is to study the contemplative dimension of St. Teresa and analyze its influence on our way of seeing contemplation. Chapter one discusses the influences in Teresa's life, in the context of the religious and social changes that transformed European society in the sixteenth century as experienced in the city of Avila. Chapter two expounds the life of St. Teresa: from childhood to La Encarnacion. This chapter brings out her spiritual journey in the context of two main periods. Chapter three illustrates the innovative concept of contemplation in response to the deterioration of Christian contemplation at the time, highlighting St. Teresa's new concept of a deep relationship with the person of Jesus Christ. Finally in the conclusion, the influence of St. Teresa in today's world is discussed.
