Abstract: | In an essay entitled "Teaching with Parables: Rediscovering Jesus' Challenge", Dr. Stephen G. Price points out that almost everyone loves a good story and whether young or old, educated or illiterate, American, African or Asian, people get caught up in the mystery of being imaginary participants in a tale told by an artful story teller. If it is a very good story indeed, the listeners are wiser and better for it, and they go away challenged and inspired in some way to live more fully. Jesus of Nazareth knew this power of stories and is famous for His tales, or parables, which He told so well that they have moved people profoundly for two thousand years. In Christ's parable teaching we see the same principle as in His own mission to the world. Jesus Christ took our nature and dwelt among us so that we might become acquainted with His divine character and life. Christ's parables are links in the chain of truth that unites man with God, and earth with heaven. Parable teaching was popular, and commanded the respect and attention, not only of the Jews, but also of the people of other nations. Christ had truths to present, which the people were unprepared to accept or even to understand. For this reason also He taught them in parables. By connecting His teaching with the scenes of life, experience or nature, He secured their attention and impressed their hearts. Jesus sought an avenue to every heart. No one who listened to the Saviour could feel that they were neglected or forgotten. Both the humblest and the most sinful heard in His teaching a voice that spoke to them in sympathy and tenderness. |
