Abstract: Malta has committed itself to reach the ambitious target of reducing early school leaving to 10% by 2020. Yet, Eurostat shows that in 2020 Malta had the highest percentage (16.7%) of early school leavers (ESL) in Europe (18-24 years). In an attempt to counter this stubbornly high rate of early school leavers, a possible quick-fix solution of increasing the compulsory school age from 16 to 18 topped the headlines. Experts, politicians and other stake holders put forward direct reactions. Whilst acknowledging the numerous factors that might affect the rate of early school leaving in Malta, it is in the best interest of all children to look at this national concern through an early years perspective.
