Abstract

The groundwork of finding out what men believed in prehistoric and early historic times has to be done by experts, each in his own particular field. Some have gone far into studying the remains of the remote past. Others have spent much of their time and energy finding out what primitive peoples of today are doing and believing in those remote corners of the earth where life seems to have remained static for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. It is on these men that we have to look in compiling this short work, and to them we are obliged to express our deep gratitude for the insight they have given us in the process [...].
