Making recycled paper

By reusing and recycling materials we use in great quantities everyday we are helping conserve the world's resources. Paper is one material which is easily recyclable. In this experiment you can learn how to make your own recycled paper.

You will need:

  • Old newspapers
  • Carpenter's glue
  • Water
  • A wire coat hanger
  • A pair of tights
  • A plastic bowl
  • An electric blender

And last but not least ... a helping hand from an adult.

Method

First you need to cut the newspapers into narrow strips.

Put the strips in the bowl and add enough water to cover them completely.

Then ask an adult to help you use the electric blender to mash them.

You should end up with a grey mixture.

Add two spoonfuls of carpeter's glue to the blended mixture.

Next bend the wire coat hanger into a square shape and slip the tights onto it to make a sort of mesh net.

Dip the net into the bowl and carefully lift it out making sure that it is covered in a thin layer of the mixture.

Leave the net in the sun to dry.

Onceit is dry your sheet of recycled paper is ready to use. Repeat the procedure to make as many pieces of paper as you need.

You can decorate your paper in any way you like and use it to make all types of things such as for example masks or paper models.
