Abstract: Given the length of the historical period of language contact in the Maltese islands and the complexity of the situation, it has been deemed appropriate to shed some light on the background against which this contact has been effected before embarking on the linguistic analysis proper. This introduction is intended to help the reader understand and appreciate better the geographical, historical and sociolinguistic habitat in which the modern Maltese language was moulded and preserved.
