Abstract: | Over long centuries, its geographical location put the island of Malta right into the focus of naval activities in the Mediterranean. This was true for the commercial as well as for the belligerent ones-and often enough, both of them could hardly be separated from each other. A period of specially dense belligerent naval operations was the one between the 15th and the 17th centuries, when the expansion of the Ottoman Empire reached its high tide, whose waves also threatened to sweep over the Western Mediterranean basin. |
