Abstract: | L-ghan tieghi f'dan l-istudju huwa li nuri kemm kienet kbira l-htija ta' dawk li fil-passat riedu jhallu lill-missirijietna fid-dlamijiet ta' l-injoranza. Il-kitbiet letterarji li se nistharreg jixhdu l-preokkupazzjoni qawwija li kellhom dawn il-kittieba fid-dawl ta' dawn il-mankamenti kollha li kellha s-socjeta Maltija sa nofs is-seklu ghoxrin. Ghall-ghan ta' dan ix-xoghol jien ghazilt ghadd ta' xoghlijiet letterarji kbar Maltin, li lkoll jindirizzaw b'mod mill-aqwa, il-problemi kollha li kienu qeghdin jifnu lil pajjizna fl-aktar zminijiet difficli, specjalment waqt il-gwerer u l-perjodu ta' bejniethom. Ghazilt erba' rumanzi li huma dawn; Ulied in-Nanna Venut fl-Amerka (1930-31) ta' Gwann Mamo, Leli ta' Haz-Zghir (1938) ta' Guze Ellul Mercer, L-lsqaq (1971) ta' Guze Chetcuti u Bejn Mara u Qassis (1984). Ma' dawn stharrigt ukoll ghadd ta' novelli miktuba minn Guze Ellul Mercer u Guze Chetcuti. Tajjeb nirrimarka li ghalkemm huwa minnu Ii dawn I-erba' rumanzi Ii semmejt u anki n-novelli, ma nkitbux fl-istess perjodu, dawn ilkoll jittrattaw is-snin ta' l-ewwel nofs tas-seklu ghoxrin, partikolarment l-ghoxrinijiet u t-tletinijiet. |
